1 "Duration"(Composition For Audio Signal) Wire Fence#02+440HZ Sine Wave
"In August 2007 I had the opportunity to participate in an environmental art event in the
area of Argyll, Scotland. (famous!) Barry Esson commissioned me to create site-specific
sound installations. I also met and worked with sound artist Lee Patterson and an artist-
filmmaker Luke Fowler. I did field recording there as usual. The essence of my work
focuses on the state of places; this concern can be found on the recordings featured on
these two discs. Below are a few simple explanations about these recordings.
Some materials are not stereo recordings. The sound signal appears on one channel
only. This is due to the materials being recorded with a single mono contact microphone.
I have placed the same signal on both channels in contrast to usual stereo listening. I
have used this solution in the past when I also felt that stereo was an incongruous
technique to the material I was recording. On tracks 2 and 4 (disc 1), I used a pair of omni-
directional microphones placed inside tall grass at a hillside slope. The recordings
capture phase shifts created by the grass shivering in the wind. On disc 2, there is one
long track. It’s a very simple composition that focuses on length of the audio signal. In
the first part, I have used a wire fence recording on left channel and in the right channel
there is no signal. The second part contains a 440 hz sine wave on right channel and in
the left channel there is again no signal. The sine wave is the same duration as the wire
fence recording.
When I returned to Japan, several months passed in which I didn’t touch the Argyll
recordings. One day I found a reissued CD of Scottish folksinger Dick Gaughan’s music
in my local record shop. I listened at home with no expectations, then came a surprise.
On the first track I heard a lyric about "Argyll". At that moment I felt the urge to release the
Argyll recordings.
This album may not provide a favorable impression in comparison to my other albums but
I like this album, especially its structure as a double album." (Toshiya Tsunoda)
