"mAtter is a highly motivated and cutting-edge label, which has started to produce artists who
declare their style of expression to be the most progressive and modern, not only in Japan,
but all over the world. The first release of mAtter is d + p by Yukitomo Hamasaki. The main
theme of d + p is division and juncture which comes from the light and shadow of spaces in
phenomenon. It pursues acoustically architectural beauty, which complete
abstractness and elaborateness.
When Yukitomo Hamasaki creates music, he doesn’t use recorded material or sampling of
phenomenon, such as by re-recording, duplications, or reproductions, which is done merely
to avoid the simple method of creating music. Through the acoustic production, based on
sine function and the contextual based on silence and special composition, Hamasaki is
successful in creating an ultimate acoustical sound, similar to Morton
Feldman. This acoustical space has a limited amount of self-assertiveness. However, the
internal action within it is complicated, so when you try to look at it more closely, there are
many layers that can’t be identified.
The album approaches the acoustic space from seven different points of perspective.
The title d + p is an important keyword in the creation of the album itself, and named after
acronyms consisting of the initial letters ‘d’ and ‘p’:
do + post
determinancy + preparation
deviation + policy
duplication + plural
demolition + production
duration + property
difference + pattern
dividend + portion
division + polarization
decentralization + population
drawing + points
data + process
These words have similarity to one another at times, and are mutually subservient /
amplifying at other times. In the end, these many combinations produce a work of infinite
combinations, new processes, and a grounded, yet completely indefinable space of sound."
